I don't recall the beginning, but the character figured out what was going on when he tried to kill himself by eating lye, but found only ley (an old coin denomination) in the box.He got it straightened out when he traveled to Haveen, Georgia and instead found himself in Heaven.It turns out the machine that was printing out the narrative of his life had developed a glitch, and was getting a letter jammed once in a while, causing it to be delayed by a letter or two.
