Scenes Thursdays

Guan-yin came home from Black Belt World in tears. She had been training for three months – enough time to get a black belt, according to the sensei that her father paid $120 a month to. A tall blond white man, Sensei George kept assuming Guan-yin was Japanese, kept asking her how “her people” did karate, as if she had some sort of blood tie to ancient wisdom. But she had to keep training. What no one else knew was that her father, a huge comic book fan, was grooming her to be a superhero.

But Guan-yin had a sick feeling that there would be more to being a superhero than three months at Black Belt World.
