My rant on #queryfail. (Search for the constantly updated twitterstream here)

[Edit 3-11-09: Very sorry, I neglected to point out that several skype hiccups interrupt the interview with Mary Jo Pehl. Apologies to both the listeners and Mary Jo!]

    Hey Mur,
Mostly my thought on the whole #queryfail thing was [let's bust out a 50-cent word] that Schadenfreude isn’t something that’s going to knock any minutes off the amount of time I have to spend in Purgatory after I die. The fact that you shouldn’t drool on yourself doesn’t make me admire people that share amusing pictures of retards drooling on themselves.

So, yah, I think everything you said about professionalism was dead-on, but I was also grateful that I’m not in a profession that has a bunch of mean-spirited gatekeepers I have to deal with.

Oh, and unless the goal is to sound like a tweenager, we should probably stop using the word “fail” as an interjection. (Can we toss out FTW at the same time?) :)

    Not being a dick, FTW!

  2. Arkle says:

Is anyone else having an issue of skipping during the episode? Listening to the first of the 2 interviews, several times it sound like whole (small) chunks have gone missing.

  3. MikeA says:

Good call on the queryfail thing. Are people really that upset? Looking at some of the crazy stuff on there, I wondered if people were putting in spoof submissions or something.

BTW Mur, I think you invented a new word – lambblasted? Sounds like a fun punishment, but isn’t it cruel to animals? ;-)

  4. MikeA says:

Uh, yeah I had some strange jump-cuts in the first interview. Thought it was just my flakey iPod.

  5. Hey Mur, listening to this episode now and loving both interviews. Mary Jo Pehl seems so sweet and unassuming, and Tobias Buckell is as awesome as always. The queryfail thing is interesting. While I can understand peoepl getting irritated by it, I’d personally really appreciate the chance to get tips from editors and agents on what not to do. Advice like that is every bit as important as telling writers the right thing to include, and as hard as negative criticism is to take, in the long run ot works towards making people better writers. I could certainly use the help ;)

  6. Oh great- a comment I post regarding writing has a typo in it. I guess I do need that queryfail thing…

I am in the last few minutes of an ISBW Murathon,.. from uno to 112 (Wow, amazing content). I have been on this for over a week at ever free moment I get which sadly is too much since I am a full time freelance employment seeker.

I need to thank you Mur – Thank You. Writing has always been something I dabbled in for my own enjoyment (short, very short and uber short stories) but never properly practiced or experimented with. Now I see it as something I need to do in a more serious manner (yet maintain a joyous feel) and I am now clear that it is not hard to be a writer, it is hard to be a good writer.

I will attempt the snowflake method with some of my pre-written short stories and ideas to see how practical it might be to expand on a story that could hopefully be fleshed out into a meatier tale. It’s like a new toy – fun fun fun.

Keep up the spectacular work,.. We are all better for it.

Mur, I finally got around to listening to this today while making food and your rant on #queryfail just made my morning. Brilliant stuff Mur.

FYI: I had the same skipping thing that Arkle had on at least one of the interviews too.
