Although they are sincere when they ask to see more work from you, they are not anxiously waiting for you to response, they're busy moving on to the next submission in their giant pile. So, when you don't get back to them promptly, they're not thinking, "That writer is blowing us off! Let's never publish him/her!" No worries there.Second, I don't think those kinds of requests really expire, at least not at the magazine level. No matter what they said, they're not going to take any story from you unless they love it, so such a request is really just a way to elevate your next submission from the slush, a note that says, "you asked to see this," such that the editors will probably give the piece a little extra attention. A magazine would certainly rather wait a long time and see the next piece that you think is good and fits their style, rather than have you hustle through just any old story and mail it off. When you do have that next story, mention the editor's request to see more work in your cover letter, and attach/enclose a copy of that communication at the end. Then they can see the title of the work, the specific positive comments, and the name of the editor who gave those comments. Maybe the story title will job their memory. Or maybe it's months and months later and there's been a change in staff, but the new editors see the name of a previous editor, and they know that guy's taste was good, so they read your submission faster. They're not going to wonder what took you so long, because they've too busy to worry about such things. They'll just read the new story, and you won't have lost any opportunity at all.</itunes:summary> <itunes:author>The Murverse</itunes:author> <itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit> <itunes:duration>19:17</itunes:duration>

ISBW #167 – Big/little things / Jess Haines Interview

Audio

I Should Be Writing

featured

isbw

Jess Haines

0:06 ISBW #167 1:12 State of the Mur: doing better! A thought: it does not matter how many times your story or topic has been done, it only matter who your characters are and how you execute the story. CKHB agrees: go check out my “That was my idea!” blog post, with video. This is not safe for work or kids. We are explicit here. Don't say I didn't warn you.Tidbits before the detailed show notes come: John's awesome songs are "I Should Be Writing" and "George R. R. Martin Is Not Your B****." NYT BESTSELLING author Carriger just scored two more books, making her Alexia Tarraboti series 5 books total *so far*. I still highly recommend them. And Matt Wallace is now a screenwriter and thinks he's better than all of us.(NOTE- at the beginning when I flub the show number, I whine that I haven't even been drinking, but because my audience was laughing at me, all you hear is "been drinking." I promise I was sober for this one.)(Note, ISBW still does not advocate the harming of anyone. That's all Matt.)</itunes:summary> <itunes:author>The Murverse</itunes:author> <itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit> <itunes:duration>52:01</itunes:duration>
